چکیده
Silicon microchips of size 100x100 μm with active electronic sensing and actuation reacting in a chemical environment is the vision of the research project http://www. micreagents.eu, see figure 1a. These chips, called lablets, are fabricated in standard 180nm silicon technology and will be equipped with custom developed supercapacitors allowing them to react autonomously in fluids. They are designed to catalyze reactions with inbuilt electrodes and utilize electro-osmotic flow to propel along in the fluidic system, McCaskill et al. (2012).

Simulating Self-replicating Machines
A simulation framework is described in which sliding tiles moving in a discrete two-dimensional grid can be put together to build machines. The tiles can perform logical and mechanical functions, and can be connected to each other. A self-replicating machine has been designed in this environment and its operation is summarised. Observations are made about the usefulness and the limitations of t...
متن کاملHormone-Inspired Self-Organization and Distributed Control of Robotic Swarms
The control of robot swarming in a distributed manner is a difficult problem because global behaviors must emerge as a result of many local actions. This paper uses a bio-inspired control method called the Digital Hormone Model (DHM) to control the tasking and executing of robot swarms based on local communication, signal propagation, and stochastic reactions. The DHM model is probabilistic, dy...
متن کاملDirected self-assembly of nanogold using a chemically modified nanopatterned surface.
Electron-beam lithography (EBL) was used to define an aminosilane nanopatterned surface in order to electrostatically self-assemble gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The chemically modified nanopatterned surfaces were immersed into a Au NP solution to allow the Au NPs to self-assemble. Equilibrium self-assembly was achieved in only 20 min. The number of Au NPs that self-assembled on an aminosilane d...
متن کاملReconstitution of the protein synthesis system on a glass microchip
The field of synthetic biology aims to understand the mechanisms of biological systems by designing and constructing artificial biological systems from molecular parts. One of the ultimate goals of the approach is to develop an artificial cell that is under the control of scientists. Although the creation of a bacterial cell controlled by a chemically synthesized genome was accomplished in rece...
متن کاملTowards Multi-Swarm Problem Solving in Networks
This paper describes how multiple interacting swarms of adaptive mobile agents can be used to solve problems in networks. The paper introduces a new architectural description for an agent that is chemically inspired and proposes chemical interaction as the principal mechanism for inter-swarm communication. Agents within a given swarm have behavior that is inspired by the foraging activities of ...
